One of the main components of the eukaryotic glycocalyx are glycosylphosphatidylinositols (GPIs), which can exist as single glycolipids attached to the cell membrane, or serve as membrane anchors of several cell-surface proteins. In parasitic protozoans, GPIs and GPI-APs play an essential role in the invasion and modulation of host cells' immune response.
We aim to understand the mechanistic basis of GPI assembly and remodeling in mammalian cells and parasitic organisms using a multidisciplinary approach involving structural biology and biochemical and biophysical characterization of the GPI assembly machinery.
